5 Pamper Rituals for Thriving Through Menopause by Dr. Michelle Clay

Michelle Clay

Greetings my FABULOUS sisters over 40. Dr. Michelle here to share some alchemic tips for embracing every phase of womanhood with grace and ease especially "the change". You know what I'm talking about, MENOPAUSE.

For all us Goddesses navigating the waves of perimenopause and menopause doesn't have to be turbulent when we use the power of pampering ourselves.

Even though our bodies and minds are on a rollercoaster, hot flashes are our personal summers for ALL 4 seasons, and night sweats try to dampen our sparkle, and our moods, we can still thrive and shine through it. Pampering as an act of self-care  isn't just about feeling fabulous (though, let's be honest, that's a big part of it). It's about nurturing our well-being, body and soul. It can be a prescription (a pamper prescription) for perimenopause and menopause. Let's talk about five ways to pamper yourself into managing menopause like the goddess you are!

1. Herbal Foot Baths: A Warm Embrace for Your Feet

Herbal foot baths are one of my favorite pamper rituals.

Imagine dipping your toes into a warm herbal embrace, where every ripple whispers sweet nothings to your soul. An herbal foot bath isn't just a treat for your feet; it can give you a cooling effect. Warming your feet can help release heat and lower your core body temperature and relax you to prepare for sleep.

Add a few drops of essential oils like clary sage, you're not just pampering—you're transforming! This can be especially helpful for women who experience sleep disturbances or night sweats as some of their primary symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.

2. Mindfulness: A Journey to Your Inner Oasis

Naw, Sis, you're not going crazy. Your mood like your hormones are all over the place! Mindfulness has been shown to help with feelings or anxiety, irritability, and depression that can come with menopause. "And what exactly is mindfulness?", you may ask. According to the definition by Enjezab et al., mindfulness is "a nonjudgmental sense of awareness that helps with the clarity of vision and the acceptance of emotions and physical phenomena as they occur." It's about being here, in the now, fully embracing each moment with love and acceptance. This practice isn't just soothing; it's life-changing and has been shown to be helpful for menopausal women struggling with these emotions.

3. Social Butterfly Effect: Flutter Your Wings

Connection is our superpower, ladies. In times of change, leaning on friends, family, or joining a supportive sisterhood can light up our world in unexpected ways.

It's not just about sharing laughs (though we love those); it's about basking in the warmth of shared experiences and unconditional support. In the medical world, we call it "tend and befriend". Studies show that this actually lowers the stress response and helps get you back to homeostasis or balance.

4. Self-Acceptance in Bloom: Embracing the Change

There can be significant mind and body changes during this time. Sometimes, I have felt unrecognizable to myself. Perimenopause and menopause are natural, beautiful stages of our lives. Practicing self-acceptance and flooding our hearts with self-love is like watering our inner gardens. Self-acceptance allows us to accept the changes without judgement and to appreciate the shifts. I don't look like I did when I was 25, BUT I don't think like I did at 25. Thank God for that!!!

5. Mindful Eating with Flair: The Art of the Charcuterie Board

Creating a charcuterie board is not just about crafting a feast for the eyes (and taste buds); it's a mindful moment of delicious self-care. Selecting, arranging, and savoring each delightful bite is a dance of mindfulness. Foods commonly found on charcuterie boards such as nuts, dark chocolate, fruits, high quality protein, and calcium-rich cheeses may alleviate some menopausal symptoms. Your charcuterie board is a canvas of calm, painted with the most delicious colors of where you can truly taste, see, and feel the rainbow.
