Greetings! It's Dr. Michelle here giving you some simple and natural tips to release your stress and recharge your health.
With the frenzy to prevent being infected with the coronavirus, supplies of Chlorox wipes and hand sanitizer are running low or out of stock. I've been to four stores today and couldn't find not one Chlorox wipe anywhere! Where there is a will, there is a way! So I started perusing these internet streets to find an alternative solution. We can make our own!
Homemade items are usually better than store-bought items because you put your love, care and special touch on it. Plus, you KNOW exactly what is going into it and the quality of your creation.
So I found a recipe to make hand sanitizer and I put my special FREELIFE touch on it. Remember, I told you your kitchen is your laboratory.
This hand sanitizer recipe contains lemon and tea tree (melaleuca) essential oils and a bit of coconut oil.
1. Tea Tree Oil
Has been shown to have natural antiseptic qualities, helps soothe inflammation of irritated skin, and has some natural antimicrobial properties. Studies have shown tea tree oil to be effective in killing some bacteria and viruses.
2. Lemon Oil
It has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and has a good amount of Vitamin C which helps promote quicker healing of minor irritations of the skin. The added benefit is the smell. The aroma of lemon oil has stress-relieving properties which can have a calming effect.
3. Fractionated Coconut Oil
Essential oils are very powerful and when applied on the skin, can cause irritation. Therefore, it is best to use what we call a carrier oil to help dilute it without compromising its benefits. Fractionated coconut oil is not your regular coconut oil that comes in a jar. It has been processed in such a way that it will not solidify when cold and has a longer shelf-life. The additional benefit is alcohol is very drying to the skin. The coconut oil can help ease some of the dryness.
*Please note before making your hand sanitizer with essential oils, do a test on your skin to make sure it will not cause skin irritation. You can do this by placing one drop of essential oil in approximately 1 oz. of carrier oil and place one drop on your forearm. Observe for 24 hours.
Homemade Hand Sanitizer with Essential Oils
•2/3 cup 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol
•1/3 cup aloe vera gel
•Essential Oils - 8 drops of lemon or tea tree, or a combination of the two.
Combine all ingredients. Use a ratio of 12 drops of essential oil per 1 oz. of liquid.
Pour through a funnel into a squirt top bottle.
- You can add a couple of drops of rosemary oil if the tea tree oil smell is too strong for you
- Make sure you use a QUALITY essential oil. I personally use doTERRA oils for all of my essential oil needs. Contact me if you need to order.
- Place in a dark-colored bottle such as amber, blue or green. Essential oils can lose their effectiveness with too much exposure to the sun.
- You can substitute 91% isopropyl alcohol for high content alcohol like Everclear
- You may substitute fractionated coconut oil for almond oil or jojoba oil
At this time, stay vigilant in keeping yourself healthy by cleaning and cleansing both externally and internally. And CALM DOWN!!! Do not allow yourself to get caught up in the hysteria and stress you out. We are exposed to more viruses and bacteriae than coronavirus on a daily basis and our immune system protect us.
