Happy Summer Solstice!

This day marks the longest day of the year with the shortest night and the official beginning of summer.

It is the perfect time to illuminate the areas we want to focus on and shift. Reflect on how we can detox from past disappointments, drama, and toxic stress and rise to a new level of living and thriving in our lives.

The latest news reports are talking a lot about anxiety and trauma, specifically separation anxiety of children from their parents and the long-term impact it can have. What the children are experiencing is something called 'toxic stress',  adults can experience it also.

According to Harvard University's Center for the Developing Child, toxic stress is “strong, frequent, and/or prolonged adversity—such as physical or emotional abuse, chronic neglect, caregiver substance abuse or mental illness, exposure to violence, and/or the accumulated burdens of family economic hardship—without adequate adult support.”

It is important to note that stress and trauma are not always specific events or situations that happen to a person, but how the person perceives, processes and reacts to it.

Toxic stress and trauma, especially in childhood, severs the sense of self and abilities, a sense of being in the present moment and leads to unhealthy and unbalanced ways of dealing with stress, alters perspective on life and how one deals with situations. Not only does it change the perspective, but studies demonstrate brain development and the health of the nervous system are compromised when it occurs in childhood.

Depending on the age of the traumatic event or when toxic stress first began, determines what areas of the brain are most affected. For example, stress exposure later in childhood and adolescence can result in impulse and emotional control. Whereas toxic stress in the older adult years results in memory problems and can amplify the aging process. In addition, chronic activation of the "fight or flight" response or stress response, has cumulative effects which can affect health in adulthood.  The more adverse experiences in childhood, the greater the probability of health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and depression later in life.

But there is help. We can rise up from a toxic past and reclaim our purpose and power. It is a journey that requires commitment but is doable with support.
